Happy Birthday FamiCom!

Today, Nintendo Entertainment System, also known in many names as NES, Family Computer and FamiCom, celebrates its 30th year!

My entire childhood was probably around FamiCom and SNES. During summer vacation, when most kids in my childhood play outside the house running around under the hot sun, I shut myself inside our parents’ room (the only room at that time with TV) and play FamiCom. My older brother and I usually take turns playing Super Mario Bro — whenever Mario dies, the other gets his turn to play. Then But we never ran out of cartridges because our parents sell FamiCom cartridges in our shop. I have a lot of fond and funny memories with FamiCom. One of them was whenever the game hangs up, we usually take it out and blow it with all our might. We bet on who would win the Battle City match or the Duck Hunt tournament.

FamiCom is the console that creates gaming legends. One of them was the secret Konami code, Up up down down left right left right B A Select Start, which was popularized from the game Contra. And also where a single game, Final Fantasy, turned an entire company upside down from bankruptcy to one of the richest ones today. And of course, the every popular game, The Super Mario Borthers, on which is popular until today.

Though I do play FamiCom a lot, I was never a super cool type of gamer. I always die playing Mario and I never reached level 10 nor finished Darkman. Even so, if it’s all the same to you, here are my top 10 favorite FamiCom games in the order of how often I play them:

  1. Space Invaders
  2. Galaga
  3. Bomber Man
  4. Dunk Hunt
  5. Pooyan
  6. Circus Charlie
  7. Popeye
  8. Battle City
  9. Darkman
  10. Super Mario Bro

I also play other FamiCom games such as Contra, Mappy Land, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Megaman, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid and the rest of the “100 in 1” game cartridge that repeats the games after around 30 counts. One of my huge regret, though, was not being able to play the first Castlevania.

How about you guys? Have you played FamiCom? What are your favorite games?

  1. My neighbor still has their SNES, which I have been wanting to buy from them but I haven’t saved up the money yet. 🙁 My favorite games would have to be the Super Mario ones. 😀
